Adopting a Dog – Considerations

Millions of dogs need homes. So, why is it so hard to adopt one? The process of adopting a dog can be a time-consuming, tedious task. But the decision to bring a new dog into your home is a big one. What three factors do you need to consider before you request a meet and greet with a furry friend?

Do you have the time?: Adopting a pet takes a serious amount of commitment from the owner. Do you work long hours? Do you travel a lot? Are you away most weekends? While dogs don’t require the same level of supervision as a child, they can easily become bored like one! Dogs require regular bathroom breaks and exercise, and they can quickly become mischievous when left to their own devices for too long!

Let’s talk about lifestyle: Do you live in an apartment or house? Do you have small children? Older children? Other pets? Dog breeds vary in terms of temperament and how well they handle the dynamics of certain households. It’s imperative to understand that you’re not just taking on a new pet; you’re taking in a new family member. The needs and dislikes of your new furry friend should be taken into account before adopting.

Expensive little creatures: Sure, dog food is one expense, but what about the cost of vaccines, preventive medications, special treatments, and annual vet checkups? Don’t forget leashes, collars, beds, treats, and, of course, toys. And let’s not even get into the cost of obedience classes. It can quickly add up! Before you adopt a dog, consider if you have the income necessary to support all of his or her needs!
