Breed Bias in Property Rentals

Finding the right rental property that is pet-friendly is a challenge all on its own. Depending on your dog’s breed, you may find it to be especially problematic. If you own a Pit-bull, Rottweiler or any other type of breed considered dangerous by property renters, you may be denied residence. This decision is even supported by law in certain cities. It’s called breed-specific legislation (BSL). In the U.S., more than 700 cities have enacted it. This discriminatory law penalizes responsible dog owners whose pets pose no threat to public safety. Additionally, it allows owners with potentially dangerous dogs of other (non-marginalized) breeds to not be held accountable. The American Veterinary Medical Association is also opposed to breed-specific legislation.
