Buckle Up Your Pup!

dog health and safety blogs

What’s cuter than a dog riding shotgun, leaning out the window like a big shot? It sure is fun, but it sure is dangerous.

We all want our dogs to be safe in the car and it’s tempting to just let them pile in with no harness, seat belt, or crate. Think again because your dog can become a projectile if you stop short or are in an accident. Also, dogs roaming around in the car are a distraction to drivers, putting everyone at risk.

Secure your best friend in the back seat. A dog should not be strapped into the passenger seat as the airbag can be very dangerous should you get into an accident.

According to the American Kennel Club, “Be sure to look for safety harnesses that have thick, padded straps to distribute the impact force as widely as possible. Tethers should be short and secure at the dog’s back, not the neck. Your dog should be able to comfortably sit upright or lie down while restrained.”

The AKC cautions the use of a proper restraint because “they are not all created equal—some of them can cause your dog to fly off the seat, as was found in a study conducted by the Center for Pet Safety®.” Find out more here: Be sure to look for safety harnesses that have thick, padded straps to distribute the impact force as widely as possible.
