CBD Use in Dogs with Anxiety

dog health and safety blogs

CBD biscuits and oil are used for anxiety because of their calming effect. CBD is one option for helping a fearful, anxious dog and best used in conjunction with other strategies for helping your dog become balanced. It’s also known to benefit dogs coming out of a shelter in a poor state.

CDB should not be given as a treat, or every time a dog “acts up.” It MUST be kept out of reach of children and pets. CBD products do not contain THC, so your dog won’t get “high.” (Never give your dog marijuana with THC.)

In summary:

  • No research has been done on animals in the US, but vets are calling for it, and Colorado’s vet school is leading the way.
  • Lots of anecdotal and clinical findings are very positive.
  • Treat CBD as you would any other medication; store it safely, give it as prescribed or intended.
  • Consult a vet. Holistic vets are your best bet.
  • Though some tout its use for all sorts of things, anxiety and pain are the most common.
  • Buy only organic and 3rd party tested.
  • CBD / cannabinoid is given in various forms: capsule, treats, tincture, oil, sprays, and balms.
  • It may take a week to get into the dog’s system, but it’s important to start with a low dose and slowly go up if needed. Your vet or a reputable company can provide dosing by your dog’s size.
  • Cost seems to compare to giving your pet any other extra like glucosamine or vitamins.
  • Monitor dog. A possible side effect is sleepiness. Reduce dose as needed. Be sure not to overdose as side effects are vomiting, shaking, and lethargy.

This website discusses three distribution companies: King Canine, Canna-Pet, and HolistaPet (3rd party testing advertised).
